An evergreen, medium-sized shrub, in Europe until 3 to 5 m high. The leathery, long-stalked leaves are ovate or obovate, 8 to 15cm long, often glossy, dark-green. The
flowers are greenish, produced in erect, 6 to 8 cm long, terminal racemes mostly in
June. The shrub has an aromatic bark. It is growing in most fertile soils except
