Small shrub with winding, thin stems. Leaves obovate, dentate, 6-12 cm long, with cuneate base. Single, axillary, dropping red flowers, 2.5 cm wide, in May or June on a red stalk. Scarlet berries, 0.5-1 cm, in pendent spikes appear in autumn.
