Deciduous shrub to small tree in the wild. Young shoots reddish at first, turning grayish after. Leaves ovate, entire, glabrous, 7-15 cm long, 3-10 cm wide, light green above, glaucous beneath. Apex acuminate. Small inconspicuous yellowish apetalous flowers in catkin-like terminal racemes about 5-10 cm long. Flowering in June. Capsules three-lobed, green. Seems to be hardy.
