Erect shrub up to 2 m. Young twigs yellowish-brown and slightly downy. Leaves glabrous, 2-8 cm wide, ovate to orbicular, with 3 to 5 deep lobes which are coarsely toothed. Inflorescence in April, in axillary nodding racemes. Flowers fragant, bright yellow, about 1.5 cm long. Tube about twice as long as the recurved sepals. Fruit globose, 8-10 mm long, black. Very frost hardy.
