Deciduous small spiny shrub up to 1 m high. Leaves suborbicular, 3-lobed, 1-5 cm wide, shining lustrous green above. 1-3 small flowers in groups, about 12-15 mm long, on a slender pedicel, in April. Narrowed reflexed greenish-red sepals. Petals spatulated, white to pinkish. Stamens widely longer than petals, and equaling the style. Fruit purplish. Hardy.
