Deciduous spiny shrub about 2-3 m high. Leaves suborbicular, 3- up to 5-lobed, coarsely crenate-dentate. Lamina 3-6 cm long, 2-7 cm wide, thin, sparsely hairy above, only on nerves or even glabrous beneath. 2-3-(4) small flowers in groups, 12 mm long, on a slender pedicel, in April. Oblong reflexed greenish-red sepals. Petals spatulated, white. Stamens slightly longer than petals. Fruit purplish to black. Hardy.
