Evergreen tree up to 20 m high in the wild. Leaves glabrous, variable in shape, lanceolate to lanceolate-elliptic, 6-12 cm long, 2-4 cm wide. Young leaves reddish when unfolding. Lamina glossy green above, paler to glaucous beneath. Margin serrate on the upper half. Acorns ovoid-oblong 1.5-2 cm long, rarely produced in Europe. The hardier species of the Cyclobalanopsis subgenus.
