Evergreen tree up to 15 m high, variable in shape because of its wide distribution. Leaves tough, elliptic, oblong to obovate, 7-13 cm long, 2.5-6 cm wide, abruptly acuminate. Margin serrate on the upper half. Lamina glabrous and glossy green above, glaucous and silky hairy beneath. Acorns ovoid, 2 cm long, maturing (rarely in Europe) in one year.
