Deciduous tree to 25 m high. Leaves obovate to broad elliptic, 8-18 cm long, 5-13 cm wide, with 5 to 9 deep, bristled-tipped lobes. Lamina glossy and light green above, paler beneath with tufts of hairs in vien angles. Wide rounded sinuses. Foliage turning red to yellow-brown in autumn. Acorn ovoid, 15-25 mm long, enclosed by a saucer-shaped cup. Acorn maturing the second year. Quite hardy.
