Deciduous tree up to 15 m high. Leaves oblong to lanceolate, 8-17 cm long, 2-5 cm wide, tough, entire. Lamina shiny dark green above, paler beneath with soft hairs. Base and apex acute to rounded. Foliage turning yellow to red-brown in autumn. Acorn globose, 10-15 mm long, maturing the second year. Quite hardy.
