Deciduous tree about 20 m high. Young shoots and young leaves covered with yellow-brown hairs. Leaves obovate, 4-20 cm long, 5-15 cm wide, with 3 to 5 (7) deep, bristled-tipped, falcate lobes. Lamina lustrous and shiny green above, paler with yellow or gray hairs beneath. Acorn 12-15 mm long, with a flat cup covering 1/3 of the pubescent nut. Acorn maturing the second year. Quite hardy.
