A small tree with pinnate leaves composed of seven to fifteen sessile, lanceolate toothed leaflets. Monoecious flowers. Female flowers in erect, green, cone-like clusters in June or July. Fruit is a cone like catkin, ovoid to oblong, 3-5 cm long, about 3 cm wide, dark brown when ripe, covered by scales protecting the seeds.
