Deciduous rounded shrub up to 2-3 m high. Leaves alternate, ovate, pointed, doubly toothed, 2.5-10 cm long, 2-5 cm wide. Lamina dull green with scattered hairs above, paler and much more downy beneath. Male inflorescence is a brown catkin about 1-2 cm long. Female one is globular, with long red-purplish bifid styles, produced at the end of the shoots in March. Not common but completely hardy.
