A small to medium-sized, dioecious shrub up to 1.7 m high. Elliptic leaves, alternate, entire, 8 cm long and 3 cm wide, dull green above, paler underneath. Pinnate venation with remarkable sunken midrib. Apex acuminate, base acute, petiole 1 cm long. Creamy-white male flowers in drooping racemes, up to 5 cm long consisting of 6-8 single flowers, 0.5 cm long and 0.5 cm wide. Stamen irregular connected to the inner side of calyx. Flowers appear in early March.
