Deciduous small tree in Europe. Leaves alternate, doubly pinnate, 30-60 cm long. Leaflets quite variable in shape, ovate to oblong, 3.5-7 cm long, 1.5-3 cm wide, slender pointed. Lamina glabrous, dark glossy green above, yellowish-green beneath. Margin toothed to lobed. Inflorescence in axillary panicles, in May-June. Flowers fragant, about 2 cm across, with 5 lilac or purple narrow-oblong spreading petals. Fruit subglobose, 1.5 cm across, yellowish-cream when ripe, persisting on the tree during winter. Not completely hardy.
