Deciduous small tree to large shrub up to 4 m high. Leaves obovate to oblanceolate, 4-10 cm long, 1-3 cm wide. Lamina dark green and glabrous above, paler and sometimes slightly pubescent on nerves beneath. Flowers white, about 8 cm across, in March to April. Tepals numerous (always more than 10), narrow-oblong, reflexed at the end of flowering time. Quite hardy.
