Strong evergreen climber with yellow-brown glabrous shoots. Leaves narrowly oblong, 5-10 cm long, 1.5-3 cm wide, dark glossy green and glabrous above, paler beneath. Apex long acuminate. Inflorescence in short axillary panicles from June to August. Flowers purplish inside, yellowish-white striped with purple outside, 1.5-2 cm long, with two reflexed lips. Fruits black, pruinose. Hardy.
