Small erect shrub up to 1 m high. Leaves fern-like, pinnate or double pinnate, leathery, 10 to 12 cm long, 5 cm wide, pubescent and brownish beneath, dull green above. Stems reddish-brown. Yellow petals, scarlet inside. Flowers appear in June with up to 15 cm long racemes. Pistil long stalked and curved.
