Deciduous tree up to 15-20 m high. Bark grey, covered when young with prominent short and sharp prickles with a broad base. Leaves palmate, long stalked, 10-30 cm long as wide, 5 to 7 lobed. Lobes acuminate, finnely toothed. Lamina shinning green and glabrous above, slightly pubescent when young beneath (only on nerves when mature). Small yellow-green flowers in terminal umbellate racemes, 20-30 cm long, in summer. Fruit globose, blue-black about 4-5 mm across. Quite hardy.
