A small deciduous shrub up to 6 m high. Leaves opposite, ovate-lanceolate, 5-14 cm long, 2.5-5 cm wide, long acuminate, base rounded. Lamina dull green and slightly hairy above, especially on nerves beneath. Margin entire to dentate. 1 to 4 conspicous flowers in terminal or axillary clusters in May. Corolla tubular, 2.5-3 cm long, deep pink to violet, paler with orange markings in the throat. Bracts auriculate, 2 cm long, attached by their base. Hardy.
