A small deciduous shrub about 3 to 5 m high. Leaves opposite, ovate-lanceolate, 5-14 cm long, 2.5-6.5 cm wide, long acuminate. Lamina dull green and slightly hairy above, especially on nerves beneath. Margin entire. 1 to 6 conspicous fragant flowers in terminal or axillary clusters in May. Corolla conical with a slender base, 3-3.5 cm long, pale pink, with orange-yellow markings in the throat. Sepals linear. Bracts shield-like, about 2 cm long, attached by their centre. Hardy.
