Deciduous tree up to 15-20 m high (30 m in warmer countries). Old bark deeply cracked. Leaves alternate, elliptic to ovate-oblong, 5-15 cm long, 2.5-6 cm wide. Margin entire, apex acute to acuminate. Lamina dark green and glabrous above, paler with scattered hairs beneath. Small greenish flowers, not very showy, with a large calyx in June-July. Fruits 1-2 cm across, yellowish and bloomy, becoming bluish-black when completely ripe. Hardy.
