A large evergreen shrub or small tree, until to 10 m high, but slowly growing. Leaves 8-20 cm long, pale green above, glaucous beneath. The stalks are red. Flowers inconspicuous, lightgreen, in 2.5 cm long racemes. Fruits oblong, black, in racemes. Cultivation like Rhododendron in shelterd positions.
