Evergreen shrub to small tree in cultivation, up to 15 m high in the wild. Young shoots and petiole reddish. Leaves elliptic to obovate, 2.5-7 cm long, 1.5-3.5 cm wide, serrate. Lamina dark glossy green above, paler beneath. White flowers about 2 cm long in June to July, bell-shaped and long stalked. Frost tender, only for the milder areas, near the sea coast.
