Deciduous small tree up to 7 m high. Twigs brown, glabrous, armed with straight spines. Leaves oblong-ovate to obovate, 2.5-6 cm long, 2-4 cm wide, glabrous, dark shiny green and lustrous above, paler beneath. Margin toothed, especially towards the apex. Foliage turning scarlet to orange in autumn. Inflorescence in large corymbs of white flowers. Fruit subglobose, dark red, about 1.2-1.5 cm long. Very close to Crataegus crus-galli. Quite hardy.
