Deciduous shrub about 2-5 m high. Leaves elliptic to ovate-oblong, tough, 5-15 cm long, 2.5-8 cm wide, dark green and bullate above, lighter beneath and covered by yellow-brown hairs especially on nerves. Flowers with pinkish petals in May-June. Fruit globose, 7-9 mm across, purplish-red when ripe. Hardy.
