Deciduous shrub to small tree in the wild. Leaves alternate, obovate to oblong-obovate, 6-13 cm long, 3-6 cm wide, dark green, glabrous or slightly hairy above, paler beneath and covered by hairs especially on nerves. Margin serrate, base cuneate. White fragant flowers 6-8 mm across in terminal panicles about 10-15 cm long in July. Sepals ovate, hairy. Style and filaments glabrous. Quite hardy but the plant needs an acid soil.
