Deciduous tree up to 15-25 m high in the wild. Leaves ovate, 10-40 cm long, 6-20 cm wide, dull green and glabrous above, paler and densely pubescent beneath. Apex long pointed, base rounded, slightly cordate or truncate. Inflorescences in terminal panicles about 15-20 cm long. Flowers 5-6 cm long, white with 2 orange strips and purple spots inside. Flowering in June, just before C. bignonioides. Fruit in a dark brown capsule, cigar-like, 20-45 cm long. Hardy.
