Deciduous tree up to 15 m high. Leaves ovate, acuminate, 10-25 cm long, 10-18 cm wide, with sometimes one lobe on each side. Lamina dull green above, paler beneath with hairs on nerves. Inflorescences in long terminal panicles about 25-30 cm long. Flowers 3.5-4 cm long, white with 2 orange strips and purple spots inside. Flowering in July. Fruit in a dark brown capsule, cigarlike, 15-35 cm long. Hardy.
