Deciduous small tree with arching branches. Young shoots and young leaves downy. Leaves elliptic-lanceolate, 7-16 cm long, acuminate, finely serrate, dark green. Flowers 2.5 cm long, carmine-red to purple, campanulate with four lobes, in terminal 15-20 cm long panicles. Flowering in May-June.
