Deciduous shrub 1 m high, with annual shoots and a woody base. Twigs reddish, as petiole. Leaves opposite, broad ovate, coarsely serrate. Lamina 4-10 cm long, 4-8 cm wide, dull green and rough above, paler beneath. Base cuneate, apex pointed. Unconspicuous greenish flowers, in axillary erect spike about 10-15 cm long. Hardy.
