Evergreen thorny shrub 3-4 m high. Leaves coriaceous, elliptic to oblong, 2.5-8.5 cm long, 1.5-3 cm wide, entire (rarely toothed), dark glossy green above, paler beneath. Apex mucronate. Inflorescences in dense drooping racemes in May. Flowers orange, globular, 5-8 mm across. Fruits ovoid, purplish. Not for the colder areas.
