A medium-sized shrub or small tree, until
5 to 8 m high. The leaves look like that of Carpinus. They are opposite,
ovate-oblong, 7-15 cm long, 3-7 cm wide, pubescent on nerves beneath. Margin
doubly serrate, apex acuminate. Foliage turning bright yellowish-brown
in autumn. The small green flowers are built in racemes. An interesting
shrub, also for small gardens. Hardy.
