Evergreen bushy shrub. Leaves opposite, ovate, 3-8 cm long, 2-4 cm wide, dark lustrous green above, whitish tomentose beneath. Flowers with 4 reflexed, fleshy petals, white outside, pink or purplish inside. Conspicuous cluster of stamens. Filaments carmine-red about 2 cm long, anthers yellow. Fruit ovate, green, up to 5 cm long. Not really hardy, only for the mildest gardens.
