Evergreen tree to 15 m high. Leaves alternate, glabrous, leathery, elliptic to oblong, 3-13 cm long, 1.5-4 cm wide, light glossy green above, paler beneath, very aromatic when crushed. Yellowish flowers in March-April in terminal or axillary umbels. Fruit obovoid-globose, 2.5 cm long, purplish when ripe.
