Evergreen shrub, 1-3 m high ( to 8 m in the wild). Young shoots downy. Leaves alternate, leathery, oblanceolate, rounded or pointed at end, 5-18 cm long, entire or with 2-3 teeths, dark green above, paler beneath.. Flowers deep red grouped by 15-20, in 5-8 cm terminal heads . Flowering in May-June.
