Evergreen climber. Leaves palmately compound, long stalked, up to 30 cm long. 3 to 7 leaflets, elliptic to obovate, entire, coriaceous, glabrous, 6-15 cm long, 2-5 cm wide. Lamina light green above, paler beneath. Apex acute. Inflorescence in axillary raceme in March-April. Flowers monoecious, fragant, about 2 cm long, with 6 fleshy yellow-cream sepals tinged with purple-violet inside. Fruit ovoid, purplish, fleshy, 5-10 cm long. Hardy if planted in a sheltered position.
