Deciduous shrub or small tree. Leaves alternate, pubescent, light green above, paler beneath, elliptic to obovate, 7-21 cm long, 3.5-12 cm wide. Apex shortly acuminate, base truncate to slightly cordate, margin bristle-toothed. Greenish apetalous flowers in May. Male inflorescence catkin-like 3-7 cm long. Female one smaller in pendulous raceme, but reaching 15 cm long in fruit. Quite hardy.
