Deciduous shrub to small tree in the wild up to 5 m high. Leaves alternate, glabrous, elliptic to elliptic-obovate, 4-12 cm long, 2-6 cm wide, light green, serrulate. Apex acuminate, base cuneate to rounded. 4 to 6 flowers in axillary leafy racemes. White flowers about 2.5-3 cm across, with 5-6 petals, connate at base. Flowering in May. Fruit cylindric-oblong, brown, 2-2.5 cm long, with an acuminate apical beak. Slender pedicel about 2 cm long. Seems to be hardy.
