Deciduous spiny climbing shrub. Leaves alternate, elliptic-ovate or lanceolate (smaller ones are orbicular), 1-5.5 cm long, 0.8-2.5 cm wide, finely toothed,  bright green with prominent veins beneath. Apex pointed, base obtuse to acute. Small white flowers 3-4 mm across in terminal leafy panicles in June. Fruit globose, black, juicy. Hardy.
