Deciduous tree up to 20 m high, sometimes even more. Young branches with large papery gray-brown scales, pelling and showing then the young greenish bark. Leaves obovates, 10-20 cm long, 4-12 cm wide, sinuate-dentate, with 5-8 pairs of shallow rounded or obtuse lobes. Lamina dark lustrous green above, whitish to gray-green tomentose beneath. 1-2 acorns on a long stalk. Cup about 1/3 of the acorn length. Hardy.
