Evergreen small tree in the wild. Leaves glabrous, linear, very tough, with large hooked teeths, up to 50 cm long and drooping when young, Lamina kaki-green, midrib orange on juveniles. Leaves smaller, (5-15 cm x 1-2 cm), ascending, oblong to linear-obovate, serrate to entire, on old plant. Fruit globose, 8-9 mm wide. Very frost tender.
