Deciduous small tree with beautiful bark peeling in small plates. Leaves alternate, elliptic to ovate, 4-11 cm long, 2,5-6,5 cm wide, finely serrate, dark glossy green above, paler beneath. Solitary flowers about 2,5-3 cm across, pink, in April-May. Fruit conspicuous, egg-shaped, dark yellow, 10-18 cm long. Hardy.
