Dioecious and deciduous shrub. Old branchs gray. Leaves alternate, elliptic, lanceolate or obovate, 3-15 cm long, 1-6 cm wide, glabrous when mature, dark green above, paler beneath, very aromatic when crushed. Foliage turning yellow in autumn. Greenish axillary inflorescence in May: Female flowers solitary, male flowers in small racemes. Hardy.
