Small deciduous shrub about 1 m high, with pale brown peeling bark . Leaves opposite, stalked, ovate to elliptic, 2.5-6.5 cm long, 1.5-3 cm wide, serrate, light green and pubescent above, whitish tomentose beneath. White flowers about 1.5 cm across, with 5 petals, in terminal cymes in May. Hardy.
