Deciduous small shrub with light-brown peeling bark. Leaves opposite, ovate or narrow ovate, entire, acuminate, 4-22 cm long, 2-9.5 cm wide, dark green and glabrous above, with 3 prominent hairy nerves beneath. Inflorescences in terminal panicles in September. Flowers white, 5-lobed, fragant, about 1.5 cm across, grouped in circle. Conspicuous reddish calyx after blooming. Hardy.
