Evergreen dioecious shrub, 2-3 m high in cultivation. Leaves opposite, leathery, ovate to oblong-elliptic, with an undulate margin, apex mucronate, dark bright green above, wooly tomentose beneath, 3-9 cm long, 1.5-3.5 cm wide. Flowers greenish, on male plant, in 10-20 cm catkins in February-March. Female inflorescences are smaller.
