Evergreen dioecious shrub. Leaves alternate, elliptic to lanceolate, entire, glabrous, 2-8 cm long, 0.6-2 cm wide, leathery, dark glossy green above, paler beneath. Young shoots and petioles reddish. Whitish flowers in terminal and axillary clusters in April-May. Fruits rounded, black. Quite hardy in mild areas.
