Small evergreen shrub, monoecious (or sometimes dioecious), becoming a tree in the wild. Leaves alternate, tought, entire, glabrous when mature, elliptic, ovate or lanceolate, 3-13 cm long, 1,5-5 cm wide, deep shining green above, paler beneath. Flowers apetalous, red, in small axillary racemes in March-April.
