Deciduous tree up to 10 m high. Leaves obovate to ovate, 9-32 cm long, 3.5-12 cm wide, short acuminate, tapering to the base, entire, glabrous when mature, light green above, paler beneath, yellow in autumn. Flower axillary, 3-4 cm across, on a short downy pedicel. 6 purplish petals, outer larger than inner, in May-June. Fruit cylindric to rounded, 4-13 cm long, slightly pointed, greenish-yellow, brown when ripe. Hardy.
